SELF HELP AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (SHERDA) is a non-political, tax exempt, non-profit, national development organisation dedicated to helping the populace in need of economic empowerment, human capital development, food security and other basic needs through its various programmes and activities.

The Association which was formed by a group of professionals and development workers in 2000 was duly registered as a Non Governmental Organisation by the sole registration organ in Nigeria, that is, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2004 with registration number CAC/IT/NO/17892. Our highest decision making organ is a 5-member Board of Trustees made up of 3 men and 2 women.

In acknowledgement of our excellent performance and high quality of service delivery, SHERDA was given the 2007 / 2008 NGO leadership awards by the SPDC in the areas of GMoU mentoring and economic empowerments projects implementation (that is, at the maiden edition).

  1. .STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The purpose of SHERDA is to improve family welfare, reduce poverty, promote sustainable social and economic development of the communities and enhance earning potentials in the rural communities without any adverse effect on the environment in which people live and on which they depend for their livelihoods.
  1. OUR MISSION: SHERDA’s primary goal is to improve and ensure sustainable development in the rural areas of Nigeria. The Association comprises individuals who are dedicated to providing leadership in rural development issues through capacity building in agriculture and environmental issues, economic empowerment, micro-credit / enterprise development, conservation of wetlands and endangered species, advocacy, communication and human capital development among others.  Further, SHERDA is committed to ongoing identification and support of community – based institutions that cater for the rural dwellers. It will continue to strive towards poverty reduction and proper enhancement of the resources available to the rural dwellers by providing them with training in marketable skills and income-generating activities.
